Why Your Watch's Calorie Count Is Wrong

Wrist devices measure heart rate reasonably well and estimate energy expenditure badly. Validation studies have been consistent about this for years.

What this is

A landmark evaluation of seven wrist-worn devices against laboratory reference methods found a clear split: heart rate was measured with acceptable error across devices, while energy expenditure estimates were substantially off — no device came close to acceptable error for calories, and errors varied widely between devices and activities.

The reason is structural. Heart rate is measured directly. Energy expenditure is inferred from heart rate, movement, and demographic inputs via a proprietary model that cannot know your actual efficiency, body composition or the specific activity. Small errors in the model compound over an hour.

What this means in practice

  • Use heart rate as a training input and treat the calorie figure as a rough relative measure.

When to see a doctor

  • Resting heart rate persistently much higher or lower than usual without explanation.
  • Palpitations, dizziness or chest discomfort — get assessed rather than logged.

The honest summary

Your watch is a decent heart rate monitor and a poor calorimeter. Use the heart rate, discount the calories, and let a few weeks of results calibrate your intake estimate instead.
