Methodology

The calculator uses the traditional energy-balance heuristic:

1 kg of body weight ≈ 7,700 kcal

Your weekly loss estimate is your daily deficit × 7 ÷ 7,700, and the timeline divides your goal by that rate. The 7,700 kcal figure (3,500 kcal per pound) traces to Wishnofsky's 1958 paper, which assumed the tissue lost is essentially all adipose.

We cap the recommended deficit at 25% of your TDEE. Larger deficits produce faster initial loss on paper, but in practice cost more muscle, raise hunger disproportionately, and are strongly associated with rebound.

Interpreting your result

The timeline is a best-case straight line, and real weight loss is neither. Expect the first weeks to track the estimate reasonably well (often faster, from water and glycogen changes), then progressively slow. Two forces drive the slowdown: a lighter body simply burns fewer calories, and metabolic adaptation — adaptive thermogenesis — reduces expenditure beyond what the weight change alone predicts (Rosenbaum & Leibel, 2010).

The practical rhythm: pick a deficit you can sustain, weigh yourself under consistent conditions, average weekly, and recalculate this timeline every four to six weeks from your new weight and results.

Limitations

  • Hall (2008) showed the 7,700 kcal rule overstates long-term loss because it ignores both adaptation and the energy content of lean tissue lost — treat estimates beyond a couple of months as increasingly optimistic.
  • The model assumes your TDEE estimate is correct and constant; it is neither, which is why real-world tracking beats any calculator.
  • Water fluctuations of 1–2 kg routinely mask fat-loss trends week to week. Judge progress on multi-week averages, never single weigh-ins.
  • A sustained very low intake warrants professional supervision — this tool is for planning modest, sustainable deficits.
