Focus, Screens and the Dopamine Story
What's actually known about attention and screen use — and why "dopamine detox" gets the neuroscience backwards.
What this is
"Dopamine detox" borrows a neurotransmitter to describe something simpler: taking a break from highly stimulating, frictionless activities so that less stimulating ones feel worth doing again. The behavioural observation has something to it. The neuroscience attached to it doesn't — dopamine isn't a reservoir that drains and refills, and abstaining from your phone for a day doesn't reset receptor sensitivity.
Where the evidence is better is unglamorous: sleep loss degrades sustained attention reliably and measurably, task-switching carries a real cost, and self-reported focus is a poor guide to actual performance — which is the case for measuring it rather than guessing.

What this means in practice
- Fix sleep before anything labelled a focus intervention. It has the largest documented effect.
- Reduce switching rather than increasing effort: one task, notifications off, a defined block.

The honest summary
The reliable levers on attention are sleep, fewer switches and measurement. The dopamine framing is borrowed vocabulary, and the supplement stack built on it is mostly caffeine wearing a lab coat.
