Potassium

Silver· human data

An electrolyte important for blood pressure; most shortfalls are best fixed with food.

Potassium is a key electrolyte for blood pressure, fluid balance and muscle and nerve function. Higher dietary potassium (from fruit, vegetables, legumes and dairy) is associated with lower blood pressure, partly by offsetting sodium.

Most people benefit more from eating potassium-rich foods than from pills — and over-the-counter potassium supplements are deliberately limited to small doses, because a rapid rise in blood potassium can be dangerous, particularly with kidney problems or certain medications.
