What it is

Omega-3s are essential fats, the important ones being EPA and DHA from oily fish (or algae). Most people who rarely eat oily fish get relatively little, which is the main rationale for supplementing.

What the evidence shows

Recovery and muscle. Preliminary· human data There's early, promising evidence that EPA/DHA may modestly support muscle protein synthesis and reduce muscle soreness. It's preliminary — a reasonable "might help a little", not a proven training aid.

General health rationale. Preliminary· human data Omega-3s have a broader, better-studied role in health than in fitness. That's a legitimate reason to make sure you get enough, separate from any gym benefit.

Who it suits

People who seldom eat oily fish and want to cover their EPA/DHA intake. If you eat fish a couple of times a week, you may not need a supplement at all.

Practical notes

What counts is the EPA + DHA content, not the total oil weight — check the label, since many cheap products are low in both. Freshness matters (rancid oil is unpleasant and pointless), and algae-based omega-3 is a good vegan option.
