What red light therapy is
Red light therapy — also called photobiomodulation — exposes skin to specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light. It's sold in panels, masks and handheld devices for recovery, skin and more. It's one of the more scientifically plausible "light" treatments, which is exactly why the marketing runs ahead of the evidence.
What the evidence shows
Muscle recovery and soreness. Preliminary· human data There's genuine, ongoing research and some positive signals for recovery and soreness — but results are inconsistent and depend heavily on dose and device.
Skin. Preliminary· human data Among the better-studied uses (wrinkles, some wound healing), with modest effects in trials.
Pain and joints. Preliminary· human data Some evidence in certain pain conditions; early and mixed.
Fat loss, whole-body anti-ageing, big performance gains. Marketing claim These sweeping consumer claims run well ahead of the evidence.
A note on devices
Wavelength, power output and distance matter a great deal. An inexpensive panel may not deliver a dose comparable to the equipment used in studies, so "it worked in a trial" doesn't guarantee "this gadget will work".
The honest summary
Red light therapy is a real area of research with preliminary, promising — but not settled — evidence for recovery and skin. Keep expectations measured, protect your eyes, and treat the grander claims as marketing.
