Wobbly-surface core work sharpened elite shooters' aim

In a pilot trial with 20 national-level air pistol shooters, 8 weeks of trunk core training on unstable surfaces such as Swiss balls and BOSU balls appeared to improve postural control and shooting precision more than the same training on stable ground. After statistical correction, only 10.5-ring stability and muzzle velocity remained significant, so the rest is exploratory.

Why it matters

In precision sports like air pistol shooting, tiny amounts of body sway translate directly into points lost, so trunk strength training is already a well-established part of marksmanship conditioning. What has not been established is whether doing that core work on unstable surfaces — which forces continuous balance corrections — produces better carry-over to shooting than the same exercises performed on stable ground. Instability training is popular in general fitness, but its value in a sport that rewards absolute stillness is a genuinely open question. This pilot trial put the two approaches head to head in elite competitors.

What they did

Twenty national-level air pistol shooters were randomly assigned to 8 weeks of either unstable trunk core strength training (n=10, using Swiss balls, BOSU balls and balance discs) or the same training on stable surfaces (n=10). Researchers measured centre-of-pressure parameters via plantar pressure analysis to capture postural sway, and shooting performance parameters via the SCATT laser system, with all measures recorded in the 1-second window before the trigger was pulled. Outcomes included sway area, shooting scores, 10-ring and 10.5-ring stability, muzzle oscillation control and aim-trigger deviation.

What they found

The unstable-surface group improved more across the board in the initial analyses: sway area fell by 11.03% versus 2.02%, shooting scores rose 2.46% versus 1.19%, 10.5-ring stability improved 31.55% versus 6.48%, muzzle oscillation control improved 8.74% versus 4.05%, and aim-trigger deviation fell 25.73% versus 10.1%. However, once the false-discovery-rate correction for multiple comparisons was applied, only 10.5-ring stability and muzzle velocity remained statistically significant; the authors explicitly interpret the remaining outcomes as exploratory. The direction of effects was consistent, but the confirmed findings are narrow.

Where it fits

Trunk training is standard in marksmanship sports, but this appears to be an early direct test of unstable versus stable regimes in elite pistol shooters, and the results tentatively favour instability — possibly, the authors suggest, through enhanced neuromuscular coordination. The pattern fits the broader idea that balance-challenged training can sharpen postural control, but the tiny sample and the loss of most outcomes to statistical correction mean this is a hypothesis-strengthening result, not a settled one. Larger, prospectively registered trials in this and other precision sports are the obvious next step.

What it means for you

For most readers the shooting scores themselves are beside the point; the interesting idea is that where you do core training — on a stable floor versus an unstable surface — may change what you get from it, at least for tasks demanding fine postural control. This is a reason to see instability tools like Swiss balls and balance discs as potentially more than a gimmick for balance-dependent skills, while remembering that the confirmed effects here were narrow and the sample was 20 elite athletes. It does not tell us anything about strength or muscle-building outcomes, which this trial did not measure.
