Tai Chi eases student depression, anxiety and stress
A meta-analysis of 12 randomised controlled trials in 1,057 college students found Tai Chi significantly reduced depression, anxiety and stress, and also improved sleep quality. The sleep finding came with substantial variation between studies.
Why it matters
Mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and stress are common concerns among college students, and researchers have long looked for accessible, low-cost ways to support wellbeing beyond formal treatment. Tai Chi, a slow meditative movement practice, has been trialled repeatedly in student populations, but individual trials are small and their results have varied. This review set out to answer a straightforward question: when all the randomised evidence in college students is pooled, does Tai Chi meaningfully improve mental health, and if so, on which outcomes?
What they did
The authors conducted a PRISMA-compliant systematic review and meta-analysis, registered in advance on PROSPERO. They searched eight databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, the Cochrane Library and major Chinese databases, from inception to February 2026, including only randomised controlled trials of Tai Chi in college students. Twelve RCTs involving 1,057 students were included, with 554 in intervention groups and 503 in control groups. Effects were pooled using a random-effects model as standardised mean differences or mean differences, with heterogeneity, sensitivity and subgroup analyses.
What they found
Tai Chi significantly reduced depression symptoms, with a pooled standardised mean difference of -0.67 (95% CI -0.90 to -0.43). It also reduced anxiety (SMD -0.79, 95% CI -1.42 to -0.15) and stress (SMD -0.40, 95% CI -0.65 to -0.14). Sleep quality also improved (MD -2.14, 95% CI -4.13 to -0.15), but the authors flag substantial heterogeneity across studies for this outcome, and the confidence interval only just excludes no effect. The anxiety estimate likewise carried a wide confidence interval, reflecting considerable variation between trials.

Where it fits
This synthesis strengthens the case that mind-body movement practices can benefit mental health in young adults, moving beyond individual small trials to a quantitative pooled estimate. However, the high heterogeneity — particularly for anxiety and sleep — means the true size of the effect is uncertain and probably depends on how the intervention was delivered. The authors themselves conclude that further high-quality RCTs are needed to confirm the findings and to determine optimal intervention protocols, such as session frequency, duration and style, which this review could not settle.
What it means for you
For students or anyone in a similar life stage, this is a reason to think that a gentle, structured movement practice like Tai Chi can support mood and stress levels, not just physical fitness. The effect sizes for depression and stress were moderate rather than dramatic, and the sleep benefit is the least certain of the four outcomes. It is informational evidence about a category of practice, not a prescription — and it does not suggest Tai Chi replaces professional support where that is needed.
