VR waterscapes beat landscapes in exercise trial

In a 12-week randomised trial of virtual reality exercise, participants viewing professionally produced 360° waterscapes improved mental quality of life, fat-free mass and BMI, and reported more restorativeness and less VR sickness than those viewing self-recorded landscapes.

Why it matters

Attention Restoration Theory holds that immersive natural environments capture involuntary attention, allowing directed attention to recover — and virtual reality now makes such environments available to anyone with a headset, regardless of where they live. Landscapes and waterscapes are both considered restorative settings that foster a sense of connection with nature and a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere. What has been unclear is whether the type and quality of the virtual scene changes the health payoff of exercising within it. This trial compared two concrete implementations: professionally produced waterscapes and self-recorded landscapes.

What they did

In a randomised controlled trial conducted between September 2022 and June 2023, 40 eligible participants were assigned to a waterscape group and 32 to a landscape group. All participants completed identical exercise sessions of 30 minutes each, once weekly for 12 weeks. Virtual reality headsets displayed two different series of non-repetitive 360° videos — professionally produced waterscapes for one group, self-recorded landscapes for the other. Data were collected before and after the programme using a body composition analyser and self-administered questionnaires.

What they found

The waterscape group improved on both comprehensive and mental quality of life, alongside gains in skeletomuscular index and fat-free mass, while their body mass index decreased. Waterscape participants also reported a greater sense of perceived restorativeness during the sessions and experienced less virtual reality sickness than those viewing landscapes. In other words, with the exercise programme held identical, the professionally produced water scenery was associated with superior mental and physical outcomes. The authors conclude that VR exercise in immersive natural environments can serve as a restorative experience for health promotion.

Where it fits

The result is broadly consistent with Attention Restoration Theory and with research suggesting water features are particularly calming components of natural scenes. However, the design confounds two things: the scenery type (water versus land) and the production quality (professional versus self-recorded), so it cannot say which drove the difference. The sample was modest and the exercise dose light at one 30-minute session per week, leaving open how the findings scale. Whether professionally filmed landscapes would match waterscapes is the obvious next experiment.

What it means for you

For anyone curious about exercise technology or struggling to access real nature, this is a reason to think the virtual environment you exercise in is not neutral — higher-quality, water-rich scenery was associated with better mental wellbeing, greater restorativeness and even more comfortable headset use. It also hints that cheaply made virtual content may blunt the benefits and worsen motion sickness. As a single modest trial with an entangled comparison, it flags an interesting design principle rather than proving water itself is the active ingredient.
