Balance training lifts strength scores in older men
Eight weeks of dynamic neuromuscular stability exercises, three sessions a week, improved balance and lower-limb strength in older men: the trained group gained 3.79 points on the Berg Balance Scale, 1.77 extra repetitions on the Chair Stand Test and cut 0.87 seconds from the Timed Up and Go, versus a group doing nothing.
Why it matters
Falls are one of the clearest threats to independence in later life, and the two physical qualities that most reliably protect against them are balance and lower-limb strength. Both decline with age, and both are trainable, which makes the question of which training method works best a practical one. Dynamic neuromuscular stability is an approach built around developmental movement patterns and trunk control rather than conventional resistance work. Whether it produces measurable gains in the functional tests clinicians actually use to gauge fall risk had not been well established in older men.
What they did
This was a randomised controlled trial in thirty older men aged 61 to 76 years, allocated either to a dynamic neuromuscular stability exercise group of 15 or a control group of 15 that received no intervention at all. The exercise group trained for eight weeks at three sessions per week. Three functional outcomes were measured at baseline and after the intervention: the Berg Balance Scale for static balance, the Timed Up and Go test for dynamic balance, and the Chair Stand Test for lower-limb strength. Analysis of covariance was used, adjusting for age differences between the groups at baseline.
What they found
All three outcomes improved significantly in the exercise group relative to control. The Berg Balance Scale showed an adjusted between-group difference of 3.79 points, the largest and most statistically robust effect. The Chair Stand Test improved by an adjusted 1.77 repetitions, and the Timed Up and Go was faster by an adjusted 0.87 seconds. The authors report that these differences held when adjusted for the baseline age differences between groups. No adverse outcomes or null results are described in the abstract, and the control group, receiving nothing, provides no comparison against another form of exercise.

Where it fits
The finding is consistent with a broad literature showing that structured exercise improves balance and functional strength in older adults, and it extends that work to a specific neuromuscular stability protocol. What it cannot do is show that this approach beats conventional strength or balance training, because the comparison was against no training rather than an alternative programme. With thirty participants, all male, at a single site over eight weeks, the effect sizes should be treated as provisional. Whether the improvements persist after training stops, and whether they translate into fewer actual falls, are the obvious open questions.
What it means for you
This is a reason to think that a structured, supervised programme focused on trunk control and movement quality can shift the standard clinical measures of balance and leg strength in older men within a couple of months. The improvements were measured on tests that clinicians use to estimate fall risk, which makes them meaningful rather than merely statistical. It does not tell you that this method is superior to squats, walking or conventional balance drills, since none of those were tested here. The broader takeaway is the familiar one: doing something structured beats doing nothing, and quickly.
