Tai chi sharpened minds and legs in 12 weeks

Older adults with mild cognitive impairment who practised tai chi and baduanjin three times a week for 12 weeks outscored controls by 2.04 points on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment and improved strength and mobility — though BMI and body fat didn't significantly change.

Why it matters

Cognitive decline is a common concern in ageing populations, and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) often precedes dementia — making it a critical window for intervention. Mind-body exercise such as tai chi and baduanjin combines mental focus with physical movement, and in theory could improve cognitive and physical function at the same time. Whether a structured programme actually delivers measurable gains across cognition, physical performance and body composition in older adults with MCI is the question this trial set out to answer. If effective, such low-cost, low-barrier activities could be a practical tool against MCI-related decline.

What they did

Researchers ran a randomised controlled trial with community-dwelling adults aged 60 and over in Nanjing, China. Participants were assigned either to a mind-body exercise group practising tai chi and baduanjin — three sessions per week, 60 minutes per session, for 12 weeks — or to a control group receiving standard health education and light stretching. Cognitive outcomes included the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), memory and executive function. Physical function was measured with the 30-second chair stand, 30-second arm curl, 2.44-metre up-and-go and single-leg stand, while body composition covered waist and hip circumference, body fat percentage and BMI.

What they found

After 12 weeks, the mind-body group showed significantly greater improvement in MoCA score than controls (Δ = 2.04, p < .01), along with gains in memory (Δ = 0.72 points) and executive function (Δ = 0.37 points). Physical function improved too: participants managed more repetitions in the 30-second chair stand (Δ = 5.93) and arm curl (Δ = 5.17) tests and were faster on the up-and-go (Δ = -0.73 s). Body composition was the exception — although modest reductions in waist and hip circumference were observed, there were no statistically significant group differences in BMI or overall body fat percentage.

Where it fits

The results support mind-body exercise as a nonpharmacological option for older adults with MCI, adding a multidimensional angle by showing cognitive and physical gains in the same programme. The authors frame it as a practical, low-cost strategy suitable for community-based programmes. But it is one 12-week trial in a single Chinese community, the abstract does not report participant numbers, and there is no follow-up to show whether the cognitive gains persist or translate into delayed dementia. The null body-composition result also suggests 12 weeks of gentle movement is not enough to shift fat or BMI meaningfully.

What it means for you

This is a reason to think that gentle, structured movement that demands attention — flowing sequences you have to concentrate on — may be relevant to cognitive health in later life, not just balance and strength. The simultaneous gains in chair-stand and mobility performance suggest the physical benefits are real even at modest intensity. Equally, the flat BMI and body fat results are a useful corrective: this style of exercise is not a fat-loss intervention on this timescale. Anyone concerned about their own cognition should raise it with a clinician rather than self-manage.
