Lifting weights sharpens some thinking, not all of it

A systematic review and meta-analysis in healthy adults links multi-session resistance exercise to improvements in global cognition, executive function, working memory and processing speed. Episodic memory showed no consistent benefit.

Why it matters

Cognitive decline is a growing global concern, and lifestyle-based interventions are increasingly recognised as promising preventive strategies. Resistance exercise is one candidate, but a key unresolved question is whether its cognitive effects are broad or confined to particular mental abilities. Different studies have measured very different aspects of thinking, making the overall picture hard to read. This review set out to synthesise the evidence on multi-session resistance exercise and cognition in healthy adults, organising outcomes within the Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) framework — a broad, structured model of human cognitive abilities — to map exactly where lifting does and does not help.

What they did

Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines and a PROSPERO-registered protocol, the authors ran comprehensive searches of electronic databases for studies evaluating multi-session resistance exercise interventions with cognitive outcomes in healthy adults. Study quality was assessed with the RoB 2 risk-of-bias tool. Random-effects Generic Inverse Variance meta-analyses were conducted to account for between-study heterogeneity. Cognitive outcomes were independently classified into five domains: global cognition, executive function, working memory, processing speed and episodic memory, allowing domain-by-domain analysis rather than a single pooled cognitive score.

What they found

Resistance exercise was associated with improvements in global cognition and in several specific domains: executive function, working memory and processing speed all showed benefits. The clear exception was episodic memory — the recall of specific past events — where retrieval showed no consistent overall benefit and substantial variability across studies. The authors conclude the cognitive effects of resistance training are domain-specific rather than uniform, appearing most promising for processes involving executive control, working memory and rapid information processing.

Where it fits

This synthesis strengthens the case that strength training is relevant to brain function, not just muscle, while adding an important nuance the field needed: the benefits are not spread evenly across cognitive abilities. It complicates any blanket claim that lifting 'improves memory', since episodic memory was precisely where no consistent effect emerged. The authors urge caution given heterogeneity across studies, limited evidence in some domains, and wide variation in intervention duration, intensity and cognitive measurement. They call for larger samples and more consistent CHC-aligned outcome measures to firm up the evidence base.

What it means for you

This is a reason to think of resistance training as an investment in how sharply you plan, focus, hold information in mind and process it quickly — not only in how strong you are. It is also a reason for healthy scepticism towards claims that lifting will improve every kind of memory, since recall of specific events showed no reliable benefit here. Because the underlying studies varied so much in length and intensity, the review cannot say what programme works best. The broad signal, though, is that strength work and cognitive health appear genuinely connected in healthy adults.
