Exercise snacks kept pace with HIIT and felt easier
Overweight and obese female university students doing 75 minutes a week of bodyweight 'exercise snacks' improved weight, body fat, VO2max, blood lipids and jump power over 8 weeks similarly to time-matched HIIT, while rating the sessions as noticeably easier. Only the HIIT group, however, lowered diastolic blood pressure.
Why it matters
Overweight and obesity are increasingly prevalent among female university students, yet conventional exercise programmes often fail in this group for two familiar reasons: they demand too much time and adherence collapses. Exercise snacks — very short bouts of activity scattered across the week — have been proposed as a flexible, time-efficient alternative that removes the scheduling barrier. Whether snacking on exercise can genuinely match a structured high-intensity interval programme for body composition and cardiometabolic health in this population has been unclear. This trial put the two approaches head to head with identical weekly exercise time.
What they did
Thirty overweight and obese female university students were randomised to an exercise snacks group or a HIIT group for eight weeks in a real-world, remotely delivered setting. Both groups completed 75 minutes of bodyweight exercise per week, so total training time was matched. Before and after the intervention, researchers assessed body composition, cardiometabolic health markers including blood pressure and blood lipids, cardiorespiratory fitness as VO2max, and lower-body explosive power via the standing long jump. Ratings of perceived exertion were tracked throughout, and results were analysed with two-way repeated measures ANOVA and Bonferroni post hoc tests.
What they found
Both groups improved over the eight weeks, with significant time effects for body weight, BMI, body fat percentage, standing long jump performance, VO2max, systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. The one measure where the groups diverged was diastolic blood pressure, which fell significantly in the HIIT group but not in the exercise snacks group. Triglycerides and HDL cholesterol did not change significantly in either group. Crucially for adherence, the exercise snacks group reported significantly lower perceived exertion than the HIIT group throughout the entire intervention period.

Where it fits
The effectiveness of exercise snacks in overweight young women had remained unclear, so this trial extends the concept to body composition and cardiometabolic outcomes in a population where adherence is a known weak point. The pattern — broadly similar improvements at a lower perceived effort — supports the argument that distributing effort in small doses can reduce the psychological cost of training. That said, the study was small, formal equivalence was not the design, and the diastolic blood pressure result hints that HIIT may retain an edge for some cardiovascular outcomes. The authors call for adequately powered randomised trials to confirm the findings.
What it means for you
If long, hard workouts are the reason your training keeps stalling, this study offers a reason to think short scattered bouts can still move meaningful health markers — weight, body fat, fitness and lipids all improved with just 75 minutes of weekly bodyweight work. The catch is that the snacking format felt easier but did not beat HIIT anywhere, and HIIT alone improved diastolic blood pressure. As a small eight-week trial, this is promising groundwork rather than proof, but it challenges the idea that only lengthy structured sessions count.
