Home Thai-boxing HIIT lifts fitness in six weeks

Six weeks of home-based Thai-boxing HIIT improved VO2 max, resting blood pressure, resting heart rate, grip strength, trunk endurance and body fat more than a general health-education programme in 58 sedentary young adults. Muscle mass and fat-free mass did not differ between groups.

Why it matters

Sedentary behaviour in young adults raises cardiovascular risk, and finding formats of exercise that people can actually do at home, without a gym, is a practical public-health question. High-intensity interval training is already known to improve cardiometabolic health, but most protocols are built around cycling or running. Thai-boxing-based HIIT is a skill-rich, equipment-light alternative that had remained underexplored. This trial asked whether a short, home-based Thai-boxing HIIT programme could shift fitness and body composition in people starting from a sedentary baseline.

What they did

Fifty-eight sedentary young adults were randomly assigned equally to a 6-week Thai-boxing HIIT group or a control group. The HIIT group completed eight 60-second instructional bouts at high intensity, each followed by 60 seconds of active recovery. The control group received general health education combined with strengthening and moderate-intensity exercise, and both groups followed their programmes at home for 6 weeks. Physical fitness — VO2 max, resting blood pressure, resting heart rate, handgrip strength and trunk endurance — plus body composition were assessed at baseline, week 3 and week 6.

What they found

At 6 weeks, the Thai-boxing HIIT group showed significantly greater improvement in VO2 max than the control group (P = 0.001). It also produced larger reductions in resting systolic (P = 0.02) and diastolic blood pressure (P = 0.03), mean arterial pressure (P = 0.003) and resting heart rate (P = 0.003), alongside superior gains in handgrip strength (P = 0.03) and trunk endurance (P = 0.01). Fat mass (P = 0.009) and body fat percentage (P = 0.04) fell significantly more in the HIIT group. However, muscle mass and fat-free mass showed no significant between-group differences, although both improved within the HIIT group.

What it actually shows

One 6-week RCT, n=58 sedentary young adults in Thailand; short duration, no long-term follow-up, and the comparison group received a different active programme.

Where it fits

The result is consistent with the broader HIIT literature, which links interval training to improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness and cardiometabolic markers, and it extends that evidence to a martial-arts-based format performed entirely at home. Notably, the comparison group was not inactive — it received education plus strengthening and moderate-intensity exercise — which makes the between-group differences more interesting. Six weeks is short, though, and whether these gains persist, grow or fade with longer training remains unanswered. Larger trials in other populations would be needed before generalising.

What it means for you

This is a reason to think that brief, structured high-intensity sessions built around Thai-boxing movements can move meaningful fitness markers — aerobic capacity, blood pressure, resting heart rate and body fat — within weeks, even for people starting from a sedentary base and training at home. It is equally a reminder that six weeks of interval work did not outperform the comparison programme for building muscle mass. As a single small trial, it signals promise for the format rather than proof of superiority over other exercise types.
