Banana stem powder shifted gut bacteria, not mood

A 4-week pilot trial found a 10 g/day powder made from banana pseudo-stem core was well tolerated and shifted overall gut microbiota structure versus placebo, but changed nothing measurable in mood, quality of life or urinary hippurate.

Why it matters

The gut microbiota is increasingly discussed as a target for mental health, and dietary supplements are one of the more direct ways to try to shift it. Most of the existing work, however, tests single nutrients or isolated phytochemicals rather than whole-food-derived products that deliver many components at once. That leaves an obvious gap: could a multi-component plant material move the microbiota in a way single compounds do not? Before anyone can answer that with a proper efficacy trial, a more basic question has to be settled — will people actually consume the stuff daily, and does it upset their guts?

What they did

Researchers recruited 30 healthy community-dwelling adults aged 18 to 65 into a triple-blinded, 4-week randomised placebo-controlled pilot trial. Participants took either 10 g/day of powder derived from Musa sp. pseudo-stem core or a maltodextrin placebo alongside their habitual diet. Feasibility was pre-defined as consuming at least 80% of the allocated supplement, and tolerability as no change in gastrointestinal symptoms or stool consistency relative to placebo. Exploratory outcomes covered psychological symptoms, quality of life, urinary hippurate measured by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and stool microbiota profiling via 16S rRNA sequencing.

What they found

On the primary feasibility target, 86% of participants in the supplement group hit the 80% consumption threshold. Tolerability was also met: there were no differences between groups in changes to gastrointestinal symptoms or stool consistency across the study. The exploratory outcomes were largely null — no between-group differences in psychological symptoms, quality of life, or urinary hippurate at week 4. On the microbiota, weighted UniFrac distance showed a structural difference in the community between groups at week 4, though alpha diversity did not differ, and changes in two bacterial taxa from the families Anaerovoracaceae and Prevotellaceae differed in the supplement group.

Where it fits

This is a groundwork study rather than a result about health, and it should be read that way. It establishes that a novel multi-component plant supplement can be delivered daily at 10 g without gastrointestinal complaints, which is the necessary precondition for anything larger. The microbiota signal is intriguing but exploratory, in a small sample, with no accompanying change in the functional or psychological readouts that would give it meaning. The authors themselves call for adequately powered trials to test effects on mental health and to work out the underlying biology.

What it means for you

The honest read is that this tells you a supplement was acceptable to take, not that it did anything for you. A shift in the overall structure of gut bacterial communities sounds impressive, but without any accompanying change in mood, wellbeing or a metabolic marker, its significance is unknown. It is a reason to keep an eye on whole-plant, multi-component supplements as a research direction rather than a reason to seek one out. Pilot trials like this exist to decide whether a bigger study is worth running, and that question has been answered positively.
