Five-minute 'exercise snacks' boost fitness

'Exercise snacks' — bouts lasting 5 minutes or less, done at least twice a day — significantly improved cardiorespiratory fitness in physically inactive adults across 11 randomised trials. They did not improve blood pressure, body composition or blood lipids.

Why it matters

The biggest barrier to exercise for many people is not motivation in the abstract but the perceived need for long, dedicated sessions. 'Exercise snacks' — very short, structured bouts of activity scattered through the day — promise a way around that barrier, but promise is not evidence. The key questions are whether such tiny doses actually improve cardiorespiratory fitness, one of the strongest markers of long-term health, and whether they move other markers such as blood pressure, blood lipids and body composition. This review set out to pool the randomised evidence in physically inactive people.

What they did

The authors searched seven databases from inception to April 2025 for randomised controlled trials comparing exercise snacks with non-exercising controls in physically inactive adults and older adults aged 65 and over. Exercise snacks were defined as structured bouts lasting 5 minutes or less, performed at least twice daily, at least 3 times per week, for at least 2 weeks. Eleven trials with 414 participants were included (69.1% women, mean ages ranging from 18.7 to 74.2 years), with interventions lasting 4-12 weeks at frequencies of 3-7 days per week and intensities from moderate-to-vigorous to near-maximal.

What they found

Exercise snacks significantly improved cardiorespiratory fitness in adults (g=1.37, 95% CI 0.58 to 2.17), with moderate certainty of evidence but high heterogeneity between trials. Muscular endurance improved in older adults (g=0.40, 95% CI 0.06 to 0.75), though this evidence was rated very low certainty. No significant effects were found for lower-limb muscular strength or for cardiometabolic outcomes, including body composition, blood pressure and blood lipid profiles. Compliance (91.1%) and adherence (82.8%) rates were high across the interventions.

What it actually shows

Meta-analysis of 11 RCTs with only 414 participants (69.1% women); the fitness result had moderate certainty with high heterogeneity, and the older-adult endurance finding was rated very low certainty.

Where it fits

This synthesis gives the exercise-snacks concept its clearest evidence base yet: fitness genuinely improves, which supports the idea that very short bouts can deliver a meaningful training stimulus in inactive people. But it also sets boundaries — the current data do not support snacks as a tool for improving blood pressure, lipids or body composition, at least over the 4-12 week interventions studied. Whether longer or more intensive snacking protocols could shift those markers, and whether the older-adult benefits hold up in better trials, remain open questions.

What it means for you

If long workouts are the obstacle, this is a reason to think that repeated bursts of a few minutes are not a token gesture — cardiorespiratory fitness, a marker strongly linked to health, improved in inactive adults who did them. The strikingly high compliance and adherence figures suggest the format is one people actually stick with, which is half the battle. Equally, the evidence says these micro-doses did not change weight, blood pressure or cholesterol in these trials, so they look like a foothold into fitness rather than a complete solution.
