Different exercise types, different brain gains
Pooling 54 randomised trials in healthy children, adults and older adults, exercise improved overall cognition and every domain measured, with aerobic work showing the greatest benefit for global cognition, resistance training for executive function and mind-body exercise for memory. Older adults gained the most.
Why it matters
Chronic exercise is routinely promoted as a non-pharmacological way to support thinking, but most reviews treat "exercise" as one undifferentiated thing. That leaves the practical questions unanswered: what type, how often, how hard, for how long, and does the answer change with age? The FITT-VP framework breaks a programme into frequency, intensity, bout duration, type, volume or total intervention length, and progression. Few analyses have examined all of those variables in healthy populations rather than in patients, so it has been unclear whether the cognitive benefit is generic or specific to particular kinds of training.
What they did
The authors ran a systematic review and meta-analysis following PRISMA guidelines, searching PubMed and Web of Science. They included 54 randomised controlled trials of exercise interventions in healthy children, adults and older adults, deliberately excluding the clinical populations that dominate much of this literature. Outcomes were grouped into five cognitive domains: global cognition, executive function, memory, attention and information processing. Moderation analyses then tested whether effects differed by participant age and by each of the FITT-VP exercise variables, so that the type and dose of training could be examined rather than just the presence of exercise.
What they found
Exercise benefited overall cognition and every one of the sub-domains assessed. When training type was examined, aerobic exercise showed the greatest benefit for global cognition, resistance exercise the greatest benefit for executive function, and mind-body exercise benefited memory. Across the age groups, older adults showed the largest advantages over controls for global cognition, executive function and memory, suggesting the benefit is not uniform across the lifespan. The authors were explicit that the evidence base for attention and information processing remains sparse, and called for additional studies before conclusions are drawn about those two domains.

Where it fits
This confirms the broad existing picture that regular exercise supports cognitive function, and extends it by mapping specific FITT-VP variables onto specific cognitive domains in people who are not already ill. The important caution is design: the type-by-domain pattern comes from comparing different trials with each other, not from trials that randomised people to aerobic versus resistance versus mind-body training. That makes the pattern suggestive rather than definitive. Open questions include the minimum useful dose, whether progression matters independently of volume, and why older adults appear to respond more strongly.
What it means for you
This is a reason to think that the kind of training you do may shape which aspect of thinking benefits most, rather than exercise being a single undifferentiated brain tonic. It also supports the idea that it is not too late to start: the largest effects in this analysis were in older adults. Because the comparisons between exercise types are indirect, treating one modality as clearly superior would be reading past the evidence. The finding is informational, not a programme, and says nothing about treating diagnosed cognitive impairment.
