Deer velvet extract eased fatigue in a small trial

In an 8-week randomised placebo-controlled trial, 100 adults with chronic fatigue syndrome taking an enzyme-derived deer velvet extract reported greater improvement in general and physical fatigue and in fatigue-related motivation, with a longer exercise distance to exhaustion after outliers were excluded.

Why it matters

Chronic fatigue syndrome markedly impairs quality of life in working-age adults, and with few effective options many people turn to nutritional supplements to manage symptoms. That demand runs well ahead of the human evidence, and products are often sold on the strength of animal or laboratory work alone. YC-1101, an enzymatically derived deer velvet extract, had shown anti-fatigue potential in preclinical studies, but clinical data in people were limited. This trial set out to test whether the extract could improve subjective fatigue, fatigue-related blood markers and cardiorespiratory endurance in adults diagnosed with the condition, and whether it was safe over two months.

What they did

One hundred patients with chronic fatigue syndrome were randomised in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to receive either YC-1101 or placebo daily for eight weeks. Subjective fatigue was measured at baseline, at an interim point and at the end of the intervention using the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory and the Fatigue Severity Scale. Fatigue-related blood biomarkers and cardiorespiratory endurance were assessed at baseline and after the intervention. Safety outcomes and adverse events were monitored throughout. Analyses looked for group-by-time interactions, meaning whether the trajectory over the eight weeks differed between the supplement and placebo arms.

What they found

Compared with placebo, the extract significantly improved Factor 1 of the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory — general and physical fatigue — at weeks 4 and 8, with a group-by-time interaction of p = 0.002. The individual items "I feel tired" and "I get tired easily" both improved at both time points. On the Fatigue Severity Scale, fatigue-related motivation and functional interference improved at weeks 4 and 8. After excluding outliers, exercise distance to exhaustion was significantly greater in the supplement group and lactate levels showed a significant group-by-time interaction at week 8. No significant differences in safety outcomes emerged and no adverse events were reported.

What it actually shows

Where it fits

This moves deer velvet extract from preclinical anti-fatigue signals into human trial data, which is a genuine step, but it is a single eight-week study and several authors are affiliated with the company behind the product. The strongest results are self-reported questionnaire domains rather than hard physiological endpoints, and the endurance finding depended on excluding outliers, which weakens confidence in it. Independent replication in larger and longer trials, with pre-specified analysis of the exercise data, would be needed before the extract could be regarded as an established option for chronic fatigue.

What it means for you

If you live with persistent fatigue, this is a reason to think one specific deer velvet extract produced measurable improvement on fatigue questionnaires over eight weeks, with no adverse events reported. It is not a reason to assume any deer velvet product on a shelf behaves the same way, since this trial tested a particular enzymatically derived preparation. Weigh the commercial involvement of some authors and the reliance on self-reported outcomes when reading the result. Treat it as an early, single-trial signal that needs independent confirmation before it means much for practice.
