Swimmers slept more with 09:00 starts but swam no faster

Delaying morning training from 07:00 to 09:00 gave national-level swimmers 1.0 h more sleep per night on average — but recovery and 100 m and 800 m time-trial performance did not measurably improve over the 8-day camps.

Why it matters

Swimmers routinely fall short of recommended sleep durations, and the sport's culture of very early morning sessions is a prime suspect. Sleep is widely assumed to underpin recovery and, by extension, performance, so pushing training later looks like an obvious fix. But whether extending sleep by delaying the alarm actually improves how athletes recover and perform has rarely been tested directly under controlled conditions. This trial set out to answer exactly that: does a later morning session lengthen sleep, and does any extra sleep then translate into better recovery and faster swimming?

What they did

Researchers ran a randomised cross-over trial with 27 national-level swimmers — 13 females and 14 males, average age 15.6 years — who completed two 8-day training camps in January and October 2023 in Saarbrücken, Germany. In one camp the morning session started at 07:00, in the other at 09:00, with the order randomised. Sleep and recovery were tracked with actigraphy, sleep diaries and the Short Recovery and Stress Scale. Performance was assessed with 100 m main-stroke and 800 m freestyle time trials before and after each camp, and the team used mixed-effects models plus mediation analysis to test whether sleep changes drove any recovery or performance effects.

What they found

The headline result was clear on sleep: swimmers slept 1.0 h longer per night on average in the late-start condition, a highly significant difference. Everything downstream, however, stayed flat. Recovery measures showed no significant effect of training time, and neither the 100 m nor the 800 m time trials improved with the later start. The mediation analysis also found no indirect pathway from sleep duration to mental capacity, or from mental capacity to performance. In short, the intervention did exactly what it promised for sleep, but the expected knock-on benefits did not materialise within the 8-day camps.

What it actually shows

One cross-over RCT in 27 adolescent national-level swimmers across two 8-day training camps; the extra sleep produced no significant recovery or performance change in that short window, and results may not generalise to older or recreational athletes.

Where it fits

The study strengthens the case that early morning training genuinely costs adolescent athletes sleep — a full hour a night here — confirming earlier observational links between early sessions and short sleep. Where it complicates the picture is the assumption that more sleep automatically means better recovery and performance: over just over a week, it did not. That leaves open questions about duration and dose — whether benefits would emerge over months of chronically extended sleep, whether an hour is enough to matter, and whether older or more sleep-deprived athletes would respond differently. Performance effects of sleep may simply need longer to surface than an 8-day camp can capture.

What it means for you

If you train very early, this is solid evidence that the alarm clock is genuinely eating into your sleep — the swimmers gained a full hour just by starting two hours later. It is equally a reason to keep expectations realistic: an extra hour of sleep for around a week did not make these athletes recover better or swim faster, so short-term sleep extension is not a quick performance hack. The more durable takeaway is about chronic patterns: early starts and short sleep tend to travel together, and the long-term consequences of that trade-off remain an open question rather than a settled one.
