What they did

The researchers pooled 61 randomised controlled trials that evaluated the effect of nonpharmacological interventions on global cognition in older adults, both with and without mild cognitive decline. Seven categories of intervention were compared: mind-body exercise, physical exercise, non-invasive brain stimulation, cognitive training, acutherapy, meditation and music therapy. Using network meta-analysis, they estimated each intervention's effect on global cognition relative to passive control conditions, expressed as standardised mean differences with 95% confidence intervals.

What they found

Six of the seven approaches outperformed passive controls: mind-body exercise showed the largest standardised mean difference at 1.384 (95% CI 0.777–1.992), followed by acutherapy at 1.283, cognitive training at 1.269, non-invasive brain stimulation at 1.242, physical exercise at 0.977 and meditation at 0.910. Music therapy was not among the interventions reported as showing a significant benefit. Importantly, there were no significant differences between the active interventions themselves, so the analysis could not crown a definitive winner.
