Taurine plus training beat training alone in obese men

A four-arm trial in 44 men with obesity found that 12 weeks of combined aerobic-resistance training plus 3 g/day taurine produced the biggest shifts: body mass -5.50 kg, body fat -4.90%, lower asprosin and higher spexin. Training alone or taurine alone did less, and the untreated control group changed on nothing.

Why it matters

Obesity is accompanied by shifts in the signalling molecules that fat tissue and the brain use to regulate appetite and glucose handling. Asprosin, released from white adipose tissue, is described as a glucogenic adipokine, while spexin is a satiety-promoting neuropeptide; both are reported to be dysregulated when body fat is high. What has not been well characterised is whether structured training, a common amino-acid supplement, or the two in combination can move these markers at the same time as body composition. This trial set out to compare all four possibilities in one group of men.

What they did

Forty-four men with a BMI of at least 30 kg/m2 were randomly allocated to one of four arms, with n=11 per group: control plus placebo, taurine alone at 3 g/day, exercise plus placebo, or exercise plus taurine. The exercise programme ran for 12 weeks and combined aerobic training at 60% of heart rate reserve with progressive resistance training at 60% of one-repetition maximum, with loads re-estimated every four weeks. Plasma asprosin and spexin were quantified by ELISA, and body fat percentage was estimated by bioelectrical impedance. The supplement was blinded, and outcomes were analysed with two-way repeated-measures ANOVA.

What they found

All five outcomes showed significant group-by-time interactions. The exercise-plus-taurine arm recorded the largest changes: asprosin fell by 11.20 ng/mL, body mass by 5.50 kg, BMI by 1.80 kg/m2 and body fat percentage by 4.90%, while spexin rose by 0.29 ng/mL, with large effect sizes throughout (Cohen's d of 1.17 to at least 1.87). Exercise alone and taurine alone each produced smaller improvements than the combination. The control group showed no significant change in any variable measured.

Where it fits

The finding is consistent with the well-established picture that combined aerobic and resistance training improves body composition, and it extends that work by adding a supplement arm and two less-studied signalling molecules. Because the taurine-only group moved less than the combined group, the data give no reason to think the supplement substitutes for training. With eleven men per arm, the trial is far too small to establish how much taurine adds on top of exercise, or whether the adipokine shifts are simply consequences of fat loss rather than independent effects. The authors explicitly frame their results as preliminary and exploratory.

What it means for you

The most defensible reading is that 12 weeks of structured aerobic plus resistance training shifted body composition and these blood markers, and that the arm which also took taurine posted the largest numbers in a very small sample. That is a reason to keep training at the centre of any plan and to treat the supplement question as open rather than settled. Marker changes such as asprosin and spexin are not things you would feel day to day, and their clinical meaning is still being worked out. Larger, adequately powered trials are needed before practical conclusions about taurine can be drawn.
