Language learning and cardio: different memory wins

In a randomised trial of 142 healthy older adults, six months of foreign-language learning kept the CA3/dentate gyrus region of the hippocampus stable while the non-language groups lost volume, whereas aerobic exercise — not language — improved memory precision on a mnemonic discrimination task. Combining both was the only way to get both effects, but the combination did not amplify either one.

Why it matters

Episodic memory — remembering specific events — declines with age, and part of that decline is tied to shrinkage in hippocampal subfields such as the cornu ammonis 3 and dentate gyrus (CA3/DG). Those structures are thought to support mnemonic discrimination: telling apart experiences that are similar but not identical. If cognitive challenge or physical activity could slow that structural loss or sharpen that ability, it would be an appealing non-pharmacological route to protecting memory. What has been unclear is whether mental and physical engagement do the same job, different jobs, or add up when combined.

What they did

The researchers ran a randomised controlled trial in 142 healthy older adults aged 63 to 78 years. Participants were allocated to one of four groups for six months: an active control, language learning only, moderate aerobic exercise only, or combined language learning and exercise. Hippocampal subfield volumes, including CA3/DG and the subiculum, were measured with imaging, and memory was assessed with a mnemonic discrimination task. That design allowed the team to separate the structural effects of cognitive engagement from the behavioural effects of exercise, and to test whether the combination outperformed either alone.

What they found

CA3/DG volume stayed stable in the language-only and combined groups, while the two groups without language learning showed a significantly greater decrease in volume. On the behavioural side, the exercise-only and combined groups significantly improved their mnemonic discrimination, while the non-exercise groups did not. The combined group was the only one to show both preserved volume and improved memory performance, but there was no evidence that combining the two boosted either outcome beyond what each achieved alone. Baseline subiculum volume predicted memory change across all groups, and — contrary to expectations — changes in hippocampal subfields were not directly associated with changes in mnemonic discrimination.

Where it fits

This complicates the tidy assumption that brain structure and memory performance move together: the intervention that preserved tissue was not the one that improved the task. It supports a picture in which cognitive and physical engagement act through at least partly separate routes, offering complementary rather than additive benefits. The subiculum finding hints that starting brain structure may shape who improves, regardless of what they do. Open questions include whether the volume preservation eventually translates into functional gains, and whether longer or broader testing would reveal advantages for the combination.

What it means for you

This is a reason to treat learning something demanding and doing regular aerobic exercise as two different investments in an ageing brain rather than interchangeable ones. The trial suggests that pushing your cardiovascular system may sharpen how precisely you distinguish similar memories, while sustained cognitive challenge may relate more to preserving hippocampal tissue. It does not show that either change guarantees better everyday memory, since the structural and behavioural findings did not line up. As a single six-month trial in healthy older adults, it is encouraging rather than conclusive.
