Why it matters
Depressive symptoms are common in university populations, and campuses are one of the few settings where a low-cost behavioural lever could be applied at scale. Physical activity is the usual candidate, but it is rarely separated from its mirror image — time spent sitting — even though the two are not simply opposites of one another. If sedentary behaviour carries its own signal, the practical implication for a lecture-heavy timetable is different from a message about exercise alone. This review set out to quantify both sides of that relationship in the same synthesis.
What they did
Following PRISMA guidance, the authors searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus and PsycINFO from inception to 31 March 2026 for observational studies linking physical activity and depression in university students. Two reviewers independently selected studies, extracted data and assessed quality. Thirty-six studies were included: 30 contributed to a linear correlation meta-analysis and 6 to a binary association meta-analysis. Correlation coefficients were pooled separately for Pearson and Spearman statistics using Fisher's z-transformation under random-effects models, while adjusted odds ratios were pooled separately for physical activity and sedentary behaviour groups.
What they found
The correlation analysis covered 31 effect sizes and 30,307 individuals and pointed inversely — Pearson r = -0.19 and Spearman r = -0.44 — but heterogeneity was extreme (I2 = 94.4% and 99.2%), so the authors treat these as average directional trends rather than precise effect sizes. After trim-and-fill correction the Pearson estimate remained significant at r = -0.114. In the binary analysis, the pooled odds ratio for higher physical activity was 0.53 (95% CI 0.27 to 1.07), a protective trend that did not reach statistical significance across 4 studies. Higher sedentary behaviour, from 2 studies, was significantly associated with depression at OR 1.60 (95% CI 1.26 to 2.04). Subgroup analysis showed a stronger negative association between activity and depression during and after the COVID-19 period.
Where it fits
The direction of effect matches the long-standing view that more active students report fewer depressive symptoms, but the size and stability of that link look far weaker here than headline summaries usually imply. The most statistically solid result concerns sitting rather than exercising, which complicates a simple 'move more' message. Because most included studies were cross-sectional, the analysis cannot say whether inactivity precedes low mood, follows it, or both. Geographic skew towards Chinese samples and the very small number of studies behind each binary estimate leave the generalisability question wide open.
What it means for you
This is a reason to think that how much of the day is spent sitting may be worth attention in its own right, not just as the absence of a workout. It is not evidence that reducing sitting time causes mood to improve — the underlying studies mostly measured everything at a single point in time. The wide confidence interval around the physical activity estimate is a reminder that pooled numbers from highly variable studies should be read as a direction, not a dose. For anyone reading their own habits into this, the honest summary is a consistent but loose signal awaiting stronger longitudinal work.
