Esports and health: not worse overall, but more body fat
Pooling 53 studies covering 86,652 people, esports players did not differ from non-players on physical activity, BMI, sleep duration, anxiety, stress or grip strength, and showed slightly lower depression scores after sensitivity analysis. Non-professional players did carry 4.57 percentage points more body fat, and participation correlated with sedentary behaviour, BMI and gaming disorder.
Why it matters
Competitive gaming has grown into a large industry, and with it the assumption that its participants are unfit, sleep-deprived and psychologically worse off. The research behind that assumption has been inconsistent, and many studies fail to distinguish structured esports participation from general video gaming, which muddies any conclusion. Whether the health profile of esports players actually differs from that of non-players matters both for the players themselves and for anyone who spends long stretches seated at a screen. It also matters whether professionals and casual players look the same, since training structure and support differ enormously between them.
What they did
The authors systematically searched seven databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, MEDLINE, the Esports Research Network and ProQuest, up to 13 May 2026, and registered the protocol in advance. Of 5,090 records identified, 53 studies covering 86,652 participants were included, and 36 of those contributed to meta-analyses. Group comparisons between players and non-players were pooled as mean differences or standardised mean differences, while associations between esports participation and health outcomes were pooled as Fisher's Z-transformed correlations. Outcomes spanned physical activity, body mass index, body fat percentage, sleep duration, anxiety, depression, stress, grip strength, sedentary behaviour and gaming disorder, with subgroup analyses separating professional from non-professional players.
What they found
The initial analyses showed no significant differences between esports participants and non-participants across physical activity, body mass index, sleep duration, anxiety, depression, stress or grip strength. After sensitivity analysis, participants showed significantly lower depression levels, with a standardised mean difference of -0.13. The clearest adverse signal was in body composition: non-professional players had a body fat percentage 4.57 points higher than non-players. Esports participation was also significantly correlated with sedentary behaviour, at r = 0.17, with body mass index at r = 0.09, and with gaming disorder at r = 0.10. The correlations were small in magnitude even where statistically significant.

Systematic review and meta-analysis of 53 studies (86,652 people), but the included studies were cross-sectional with moderate risk of bias and high heterogeneity, so nothing here shows direction of cause.

Where it fits
This is the first pooled attempt to separate esports specifically from general gaming, and it undercuts the blanket assumption that competitive gamers are in worse health than their peers. At the same time it does not vindicate the activity entirely, since sitting time, body mass index and disordered gaming all move in the expected direction, and the body fat gap appears among non-professionals rather than professionals. The authors flag substantial heterogeneity, a moderate risk of bias and the cross-sectional design of the included studies as reasons for caution. Longitudinal work with objective measurement and standardised definitions of esports participation is the obvious next step.
What it means for you
This is a reason to be sceptical of sweeping claims that gaming wrecks health, while still taking seriously the specific things that did show up. The pattern points to sitting time and body composition as the pressure points rather than sleep, grip strength or anxiety, and it suggests the risk profile of a casual player may differ from that of someone with a structured training and support setup. Because every included study was a snapshot, none of it establishes that gaming caused the differences rather than the differences shaping who games. The correlations reported were small, which matters when interpreting how much of anyone's health profile this explains.
