What it is
Melanotan II is an unlicensed melanocortin-receptor agonist sold online for tanning (and sometimes for libido effects). Unlike its regulated cousins in this section, it has never been approved as a medicine — and it has a genuinely concerning documented safety record.
Composition
It is a synthetic cyclic peptide analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH). It is closely related to the approved peptides afamelanotide (Melanotan I) and bremelanotide (PT-141), which makes the contrast instructive: same family, very different regulatory and safety status.
Proposed mechanism
It activates melanocortin receptors — including MC1R, which stimulates melanin production (tanning), and MC4R, which influences sexual arousal and appetite. The tanning effect is real; that is not the issue.
Claimed benefits
A fast, convenient tan with less sun exposure, and (secondarily) libido effects. Sellers emphasise the tan and downplay the risks.
