Hybrid Training: Does Lifting Ruin Your Running?
The interference effect is real, smaller than its reputation, and mostly a question of modality and scheduling.
What this is
The "interference effect" describes the observation that combining endurance and resistance training can blunt strength and hypertrophy gains compared with resistance training alone. The much-cited 2012 meta-analysis found it, and also found the size depended on the modality, frequency and duration of the endurance training — with running producing significant decrements in strength and hypertrophy while cycling did not.
Since then the picture has softened. Updated syntheses find compatibility better than the early framing suggested, particularly at the training volumes recreational athletes actually do. For most people the practical answer is scheduling, not choosing.

What this means in practice
- Decide what's primary this block and let the other discipline maintain rather than progress. Chasing both simultaneously is where people stall.
- Separate hard sessions of each by a day where possible; if they're on the same day, put the priority first.
- Prefer cycling or rowing for aerobic volume during a strength-focused block if interference is a concern.
- Progress total weekly load slowly — the injury risk is the real limiter, not the physiology.

- Persistent joint or tendon pain that worsens week to week.
- Performance dropping across both disciplines with disturbed sleep and appetite loss.
- Repeated illness during a heavy block — consider energy availability.

Lifting won't ruin your running, and running can blunt your strength gains if volume is high. Pick a priority per block, separate the hard sessions, and watch total load more closely than the theory.
