The body's internal sense of where its parts are and how they are moving.

Proprioception is the sense that tells you where your limbs are without looking. It comes from receptors in muscle, tendon and joint — muscle spindles reporting length and rate of change, Golgi tendon organs reporting tension — feeding continuously into the nervous system.

It matters because it is what makes coordinated movement and balance possible, and it degrades after joint injury. That degradation, not just the structural damage, is a substantial part of why a previously sprained ankle is more likely to be sprained again.

In practice it is trainable. Balance work, single-leg exercises and unstable-surface drills measurably improve it, and proprioceptive training programmes have good evidence for reducing recurrent ankle sprains and, in team sports, ACL injuries.
