VO₂max is a non-exercise estimate (Nes 2011), accurate to about ±6 ml·kg⁻¹·min⁻¹ — a ballpark, not a lab test. Your fitness age is the age at which the average person shares your estimate (Aspenes 2011, 4,631 adults). Height, weight, sleep and smoking are context; only age, waist, resting heart rate and training drive the estimate.
Methodology
Your VO₂max — the amount of oxygen your body can use at full tilt, and the single best-studied marker of cardiorespiratory fitness — is estimated from the non-exercise model of the HUNT study (Nes et al., 2011). Instead of a treadmill test, it predicts VO₂max from four things you already know:
- your age,
- your waist circumference,
- your resting heart rate, and
- a physical-activity score (how often you train, how hard, and for how long).
The activity score follows the study exactly: the three answers multiply together, so training that never raises a sweat scores zero however often you do it. The equation is sex-specific and we use the published coefficients verbatim.
Your fitness age is then the age at which the average person has your estimated VO₂max. To read it off, we invert a reference curve of VO₂max by age and sex from the companion HUNT paper (Aspenes et al., 2011), a sample of 4,631 healthy adults — the same cohort the estimate was built on. Your percentile ("fitter than X% of people your age and sex") comes from the same reference distribution.
How accurate is it?
This is a population estimate, not a lab measurement. The model's standard error is roughly ±5 to 6 ml·kg⁻¹·min⁻¹, which is wide: your true VO₂max could sit a fair way either side of the number shown. It is designed to be answerable without any equipment, and that convenience costs precision. Treat it as a ballpark and — most usefully — as something to watch over time as you train.
What the other numbers are
The Nes equation only uses age, waist, resting heart rate and your training. The height, weight, body fat, sleep and smoking questions do not change your VO₂max — folding them in would invent a number the model never fit. Instead they sit alongside your result as context: your waist-to-height ratio, BMI, body fat, sleep and resting heart rate, each read against the population, plus smoking as the single biggest modifiable lever on long-term health.
Limitations
- It is an estimate from self-reported inputs; an honest waist measurement and a true resting heart rate (first thing, before caffeine) matter most.
- The reference curve spans the 20–29 to 70+ age bands. Beyond the fittest young or least-fit oldest anchors we clamp rather than extrapolate, so the fitness age tops out at those edges.
- It is not a diagnosis, a mortality prediction, or a substitute for a graded exercise test. If you have symptoms or a cardiac history, speak to a clinician before starting hard exercise.

- What is fitness age?
- Fitness age is your estimated cardiorespiratory fitness (VO₂max) expressed as an age: the age at which the average person has the same VO₂max as your estimate. A fitness age below your real age means your cardio fitness is better than typical for your years; above it means there is room to build.
- Which model does this use?
- The non-exercise VO₂max model from the HUNT study (Nes et al., 2011), which predicts VO₂max from age, waist circumference, resting heart rate and a physical-activity score — no exercise test required. The fitness-age curve and your percentile come from the companion HUNT paper (Aspenes et al., 2011), a reference sample of 4,631 healthy adults.
- How accurate is the VO₂max estimate?

- Why does it ask my height, weight, sleep and smoking if they don't change the VO₂max?
- The Nes VO₂max equation uses only four inputs — age, waist, resting heart rate and your training. The other answers don't enter that maths; they read alongside your result as context (waist-to-height, BMI, body fat, sleep and resting heart rate each versus the population), because folding them into the VO₂max would be inventing a number the model never fit.
- What is the PA-index (the training questions)?
- It is Nes's physical-activity score, built from how often you train, how hard, and for how long. The three answers multiply together, so training that never raises a sweat scores zero however often you do it — exactly as the study defined it.
- Is this a diagnosis or a life-expectancy prediction?
- No. It is a fitness estimate from a published model, not a medical test, a diagnosis or a prediction of how long you'll live. Two people with the same fitness age can have very different health. Use it to track your own trend and as a prompt to move more, not as a verdict.
- Is my data private?
- Yes. Everything is calculated in your browser. Your values are never sent to us or stored anywhere.
