Machine chest press
A guided pressing machine — the safest way to push a chest set close to failure.
What it is
A seated pressing machine with a fixed path. Because the machine controls the bar path and you cannot be pinned by the weight, it lets you train genuinely close to failure without a spotter, which is exactly what makes it useful alongside free-weight pressing.
Muscles worked
Primary: Chest (pectorals). Secondary: Triceps, Front deltoids.
How to perform it
- Set the seat height so the handles line up with the middle of your chest.
- Sit back with your shoulder blades against the pad and your feet flat on the floor.
- Press the handles forward until your arms are almost straight, without locking out hard.
- Return under control to a full stretch, keeping tension on the chest throughout.
Common form faults
- Seat set too high or low, so the press runs at the wrong angle. Adjust before the first rep: handles at mid-chest, elbows travelling in line with the pectorals.
- Shoulders rolling forward at the end of the press. Keep the shoulder blades against the pad; letting them round forward moves work off the chest and stresses the shoulder.
- Half reps to move a bigger stack. Use the full range the machine offers. The stretch position is where the machine earns its place.
Programming
A chest accessory, usually in moderate to higher reps taken close to failure. It pairs well after free-weight pressing, when technique is degrading but the chest has more work in it.

Frequently asked questions
- Are machines worse than free weights for building muscle?
- No. For hypertrophy specifically, matched-volume comparisons show similar results. Free weights carry more transfer to skill and stability; machines let you push closer to failure safely. Both belong in a programme.
- When should I use it instead of a bench press?
- When training alone near failure, when your shoulders are irritated by a fixed barbell path, or as the second chest movement of a session once fatigue is affecting your technique.
